Although it has been a while since I walked this path, earlier this winter,
I am impressed how much remains, despite the frosts and rains
And considerable winds.

The bent leaves of grass that caught the sun and shone like a silver trail
Have straightened, and that guiding light has disappeared;
But where my boots sank in, and grabbed a blanket from the soil,
Their dented ground and shadows persevere, against the weather;
And the clinging rapturous clay that took apart my knees as it shrouded around my feet
Is now firm, where my feet rolled it flat, and dried by the wind
Makes an easy surface to walk upon.
