Trust is belief that is extended into the future; tried and tested, to provide a template of expected response and behaviour. Templates - patterns of expected responses and behaviours - are predictive. They give 'place' to individual acts and behaviours; once a template is formed, it gives a full pattern from what could be a very few instances of response or behaviour. Having been employed, the template guides the person's attention and acts. Predictions are made and acted on.

The response to the deployment of the template determines whether the template is confirmed or challenged; if the experienced response finds a place in the pattern, the pattern becomes more certain as a template for response. It becomes incontrovertible at some critical point; the prediction is fulfilled. The belief is confirmed. Trust is established.

Trust is established in one's belief; in one's prediction; in one's template.

Expectation shapes one's environment, in the sense that the projection of expected outcome into it "calls forth" a meeting response. Indeed, that is part of its function.

If an expectation of betrayal is thrown into the world, a bit like a stone into a canyon, and it calls forth something which simultaneously claims trust and hides - holds back, withholds; or if it is experienced entirely as withholding -

Or if an expectation of trust is thrown out into the world, and what comes back is not a response of confirmation, but hiding, withholding, not answering -

then suspicion can enter in as a distancing mechanism of appraisal; presenting an expectation of betrayal (or attack, or subversion, or harm of some kind). Suspicion is a projected expectation; a question.

Apprehension. Fear. Modes of expectation.
